The Wonderful Little Elderberry and a Recipe!

Many of us, this time of year, are trying to find any possible way to boost our immune systems so that we can avoid colds and flu or shorten the duration. The tiny little elderberry is one asset you should have in your healthy living toolbox. The elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is native to Europe, Africa, and Asia but can be grown in many parts of the world including in northern parts of America. There are multiple varieties but Sambucus nigra is the one most used medicinally and the most potent.

Elderberry is a great ally to have during times of cold, flu, and respiratory illness. Both the flowers and the dried berries can be used medicinally.

The flowers are rich in Vitamin C, flavanoids, and more that benefit the immune system. Elderberries themselves are rich in Vitamins A and C, antioxidants and iron. Elderberries are useful if taken at the onset of colds or flu because they interfere with virus replication and also help to strengthen cell walls to help prevent virus penetration. Studies have shown that the duration of colds and flu can be reduced if elderberry is taken.

A benefit of elderberry is that it is generally very safe; it helps to support the immune system but does not cause inflammation or a cytokine storm. A cytokine storm is when the immune system works in overdrive causing issues in the body. Some over the counter medications can cause these types of issues in the body. Elderberries have been used for centuries and have been proven to be safe for most.

How do you use elderberry? Well in most health food stores, you can find elderberry syrup, gummies, and tinctures. Here is a brand that like I have on hand in case I run out of my own homemade syrup and haven't made more, it has good ingredients and works too! You can find these on Amazon or in some health food stores. "My Kind Organics Elderberry Gummies with Echinacea, Zinc, and Vitamin C." If you search for this name, it should be easy to find online.

It is best to make your own syrup so you know how much sugar and all the ingredients you are adding. I have a recipe on my site so you can make your own, here it is...

I also sell kits that include all ingredients you need to make two full batches that should last a few months, here is the link for that too!

Who knew the little elderberry could be so beneficial; it is great to have on hand during cold and flu season.
